The Look of Home – Re-Connection of Re-Constructed Social Group

Under the growing influx of traffic of high-speed rail in recent years, the nearby Chingpu Special District has rapidly developed with the gradual emergence of large-scale residential communities which attracts many young home-buyers and becomes a popular residential area in the Chungli Metro Area. This design project is adjacent to the Taoyuan High-Speed Rail Station with the largest floor area of pubic amenity space in the Chunli Metro Area. The design team connects five stand-alone residential buildings with cross-amenity integration such as the shared public amenity space and the entrance lobby. The combined public area connects residents from different buildings and provides social functions and artistic values. In turn, it creates the interpersonal and community connection between residents and their families in the residential buildings in limited interior spaces and sporadic interaction.

Social Living – Stacked Boxes as Social Stepping Stone

As urbanization has become a global trend, many families have opted for inhibiting residential buildings with limited interior space such as daily private living and public social areas, which epitomize the contemporary urban living paradigm. Such residential living discourse has contravened the notion of community living and advocated for optimized interactions amongst community-inhibiting members of approximately 400 families, which is one of the significant design core values of this project. With the design concept of “Stacked Boxes,” the interior plateaus, stacked in different layers, dimensions, and floor heights, are placed in the middle of the spacious entrance hall with the public service counters and feature a grand piano, reading areas, and lounge space. It constitutes an interconnected social networking realm of various interactive dynamics. In addition to the plateaus in the public space, there are many independent yet interrelated lounge boxes demarcated by a three-layer timber grille while the mailbox rooms are meticulously concealed within one of the corners in the entrance hall as a domain where residents may linger, familiarize themselves and socialize with one another.

Artistic Living – Maestro of Gallery Concept

Apart from applying minimalist design and classic Morandi color series (e.g., a piano bar and reading area), the design team creates an artistic sensorial aesthetic ambiance, and the open spaces have served to optimize its spatial benefit through workshop events and activities in optimizing the living standard of the residents. Besides the shared lobby space, the accompanying artistic aura and social activity programs are made in the public spaces, there are designated art-gallery-like areas traversing the main entrance hall, the circulation areas, and individual entrances to each of the residential buildings. There are five distinct themes of alpaca, bear, crane, deer, and elephant, which are used to depict five different community characters. Each of them is commissioned with up-and-coming artists to compose distinguished artistic articulation of each gallery space in aid of a processional spatial transition between the interior and the exterior, and transformation between the private and the public.
