Terrazzo, as a kind of artificial building material, is made by crushing different kinds of materials such as stones, glass and granite, before mixing it with cement and adhesive, and once the mix is solidified, it is gradually formed by surface grinding and polishing. In essence, the production process is imbued with art and craftsmanship, as it establishes a traditional model different from the use of stone in the past, as the combination of different stones, materials and sizes, the color and mixing proportion of cement, and the arrangement density of raw materials, etc., terrazzo products produce thousands of variance of structural patterns, therefore, how to make terrazzo in the most suitable form on buildings, has become one of the major challenges designers need to face these days, much like the effort in comparing, blending and experiments, designers can try their best to present the perfect rendering solution. By starting with the concept from the laboratory, it has become the main design theme of our collaboration with this terrazzo exhibition, having terrazzo as the thematic material, while the main wall elevation was also decorated with wall cabinets containing many raw materials, gravel bottles with different materials and colors, which is available for designer to make the mixture formula onsite, which also adds to the experimental ambiance of the exhibition space.
匠藝與材料－水磨石特質的空間回應 Craft and Materials – Spatial Response to the Characteristics of Terrazzo
Nowadays, Terrazzo has become a popular building material, as it creates an antiquated yet contemporary feel for the space, and at the same time, it addresses the relationship between people and the environment. As the unique craftsmanship and material characteristics of Terrazzo has also become critical, this building material invented by Italians, how to sustain the craft tradition of stone craftsmen in the past, how to preserve the natural stone, as well as reusing the waste stone to reflect the increased emphasis on environmental preservation, has become an very important issue. By extending the main exhibition theme of the laboratory, a large 8 meters long rectangular table was designed as the central area of the exhibition space, as this composite-function table comprises of various material panels with computers embedded, served as not just a counter but also a place where exchanges on material display and experimental blends are tested. On table-top, there were also large number of laboratory equipment, traditional terrazzo factory props for on-site demonstration, complemented by the spatiality of the laboratory in creating a new model of how new retail affects the terrazzo industry, as much as sharing the craft tradition spirit that is innovative, and as a discourse on interactive aesthetic spirit, a brand-new experience of an exhibition site.
展場到戲台－複合使用的設計思考 From Exhibition to Drama Stage – Design Discourse on Composite Usage
As we deliberately selected the center of the masonry material exhibition site as the terrazzo exhibition area of approximately 120 square meters in size, located at the intersection of the two main circulation paths, so apart from the existing functions of display, selection, arrangement, discussion and communication, the idea of drama stage was also imbued in the design of the exhibition area, and once it is cleared of all objects on the large table, the exhibition space can be turned into an excellent stage for lectures and presentations, as the speaker can operate with the laboratory bottles as the backdrop with large screen on the wall for making presentation. In addition, the floor layout of the exhibition area is specially designed as a 15*15 cm detachable terrazzo, allowing the temporary display space to be recycled after the event, a gesture addressing today's environmental issues, as well as serving a commemorative function. This is not only a simple interior design, but a comprehensive constructivist perspective from the angles of all aspects of the event curation, and from the functional to the design levels, the Terrazzo exhibition embodied the characteristics of multiple usages, the display of general merchandise, to the ceremonial nature of the lecture.
